The Italian team Clinches Historic Third Consecutive Tennis Trophy Championship
Flavio Cobolli secured one of the longest deciding set in Davis Cup history to overcome Belgium's Zizou Bergs on Friday
The young Italian star and Matteo Berrettini propelled the Italian squad to Davis Cup glory as the home team overcame Spain to claim a historic third successive title in front of an overjoyed home crowd
48 hours following he narrowly won a marathon 32-point tie-break, Cobolli once again excelled as he battled back from a set and a break down to overcome Jaume Munar in three sets
The young player's gritty 1-6 7-6 (7-5) 7-5 success clinched a straight sets triumph for his country in the Italian city after Berrettini had triumphed 6-3 6-4 against the Spanish player
It is a fourth team championship title in total for the Italian team, who are the initial country to win three straight titles since title holders stopped receiving automatic qualification to the final 53 years ago
Local Supporters Fuels Team Italy Triumph
Supported enthusiastically by the vast majority of a packed 10,000-strong audience, the Italian star conquered a slow start to spark moments of jubilation among the Italian players, staff and fans
The champion was surrounded by his teammates on the playing surface but paused for a moment to commend his opponent on his efforts before rejoining the celebrations
Key Players Deliver in Missing Stars
Both Italy and Spain made the championship match despite being without key players, with the absence of top-ranked players preventing spectators a seventh matchup of the season between the world's dominant tennis stars
But, with national second-ranked another key player also absent, Cobolli and Berrettini seized their moments in the spotlight with three wins from three singles matches each this week
Dramatic Recovery Secures Win
The crowd chanted the player's moniker as he kept his calm to serve out his comeback victory to love, having achieved the decisive break in the 11th game of a tense deciding set
That was quite an accomplishment, given he had admitted he had realized a "goal" in delivering Italy to the showpiece on domestic ground
In contrast to the events of the previous match, when Cobolli tore off his shirt in jubilation on "one of the best" days of his life, the world number 22 paid the consequence for a poor beginning as he lost a dominant opening set
But the determined player initiated a necessary, immediate comeback after going a behind at the beginning of the following set
The Italian's fortunes appeared to shift after a brief stop in the match when a spectator of the crowd became unwell
When the match resumed, and with his opponent down a critical moment, the Italian lobbed over a volley that caught a fortunate net tape and put the game back on level terms
Although annoyingly prevented four set points on his rival's service game, the champion wrested command of a decisive tie-break to push the final set - where he yet again performed
Berrettini Continues Remarkable Run
The Italian star had earlier taken his team competition singles winning streak to 11 matches with an excellent performance against Carreno Busta
The Grand Slam finalist used his third break point for a 5-3 lead before confidently serving out the first set to zero
Having taken the majority of points to secure the opening set, Berrettini appeared ready to strengthen his grip on the match upon creating opportunities in the opening game of the following set
Carreno Busta managed to survive each before putting together a series of solid serving performances - but the Italian took his next opportunity and closed to love to finish his victory
