Edwards and Gary O'Neil represent the initial names in the frame to succeed the former manager as head coach of Wolves.
The previous coach was sacked on the weekend after the squad's ten-game winless start to the Premier League season.
And Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have historic links to the team - are among the names to be evaluated by the Wolves ownership.
The manager is currently at Middlesbrough, which would create a possible hurdle to his appointment at Molineux.
However the ex- Luton manager - who made over a century of appearances for the club during his playing career - is considered a leading candidate for the position.
The 42-year-old is reportedly enjoys support from the club directors as they begin the search of hiring a new manager.
Gary O'Neil is also emerging as a unexpected contender, even though he would be a surprising appointment considering he was sacked by Wolves in December last year.
The ex- West Ham player is currently unemployed meaning Wolves would not be required to pay any buyout fee.
