A massive Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the market's first auction of the calendar year.

The winning bid for the 243-kilogram fish came from the operator of a popular sushi restaurant group, which runs outlets throughout Japan and overseas.

"An inaugural tuna heralds good luck," stated the business owner, a familiar figure at the traditional first sale.

Referred to as the Tuna King, this industry figure is renowned for placing substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these symbolic January auctions.

Auction Surprise and Historic Past

Following the auction, the successful bidder admitted to reporters that he was "surprised at the amount," adding, "I expected we would be able to buy it a little cheaper, but the price escalated before you knew it."

This new acquisition surpasses his previous notable purchases:

  • He bid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He bid 155 million yen a year later.
  • In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Despite previously commenting that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to shatter his personal record another time.

A Tradition of Exorbitant Bids

The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously characterized by sky-high prices. In the prior year, the first tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a separate culinary group, which stated the fish would be available at its locations nationwide.

The intense atmosphere at the fish market during these early morning auctions has become a popular event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no exception.

Immediate Consumption

The multi-million-dollar tuna was quickly sliced up for patrons at the entrepreneur's sushi establishments soon after the auction ended.

"I feel like I've begun the year in a positive way after consuming something so lucky as the year begins," shared one happy diner.
