No less than 64 Killed in Rio's Most Extensive Law Enforcement Operation on Criminal Groups
No less than 64 people were killed in a law enforcement action targeting the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's history.
Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during the police action in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials stated. In excess of 80 individuals were arrested.
Intense confrontations commenced when approximately 2,500 security personnel initiated the operation on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization countered with shooting, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, authorities said.
The International human rights organization stated it felt "horrified" by the law enforcement raid, calling for "immediate and thorough inquiries".
Operation Impact
The informal settlements adjacent to the aerial transportation hub is seen as the main base of a major organised crime groups.
State officials stated at least 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Dozens of people were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.
Community Response
Locals have described the hillside area - housing around 300,000 people - to a "combat area" since the raid started.
Access ways continue shut throughout the region.
Criminal Expansion
The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their influence in the area, growing illegal substance trade paths and control of the hillside favelas.
Rio's police stated over 200kg (441lb) of drugs were seized in the mission, in addition to multiple guns.
Raid Preparation
The coordinated mission by different law enforcement agencies was preceded by a year-long investigation.
Dozens of the suspects are considered members of a faction from the northern region who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.
