New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”
The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the hospital, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”
NYPD released video stills Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims were reported.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday about halfway between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a baby.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd was inactive during the current season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was projected as a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has remained around the team all season long while working his way back.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
