Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Earn Initial Wins Following Recent Arrests

NBA game action

The Miami Heat scored eighty-six opening half points against the Grizzlies

Miami Heat claimed a overwhelming 146 to 114 victory against the Grizzlies in their initial basketball match after player Rozier was arrested for alleged unlawful sports betting.

Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups was also arrested in connection with a sweeping federal probe into sports betting. The two individuals contest the allegations.

But, the Heat were not distracted as they put up 86 first-half points to be ahead of the Grizzlies by 39 at halftime, the biggest half-time advantage in the team's 37-year history.

Bam Adebayo top-scored with 24 scores and later said Terry had the support of the team.

"We support him. Complete backing," Adebayo stated. "We are with him all the way. He's like family ultimately."

Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Terry is somebody who is important to all of us. He's had a beneficial influence on our team.

"Our thoughts are with him and our care for him as he faces the situation."

The Trail Blazers also won their initial match after the detentions, with Brazil-born Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Billups' non-attendance and leading the squad to a decisive 139-119 win against the Warriors.

"We all had great experiences with Chauncey and his coaching style," Splitter remarked. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' by Recent Events

Speaking about the arrests for the first time, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the events of the recent days.

"Nothing is more critical to the NBA and supporters than the integrity of the game," he told a broadcaster. "And so I felt uneasy. It was very upsetting."

Silver further said an NBA investigation into the player's actions in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he played for the Charlotte Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the betting companies," he continued.

"We then looked into that situation and were open regarding it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, found no evidence.

"Federal authorities has subpoena power... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the league office can't do.

"Therefore, we've been cooperating from that point. Naturally, what they announced yesterday was an charge.

"Moreover 30 months after, he has not been found guilty of anything, in justice to Rozier.

"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance in this case between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
