Massive Disruption Forecasted: Britain's Worst-Case Global Warming Outcomes Laid Bare by Experts
The direst potential impacts of the global heating for the UK have been outlined by experts, ranging from a searing 4C jump in temperatures to a 2-metre increase in sea level. A separate possibility envisions a decline of 6C in temperature following the failure of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt food production and energy demand.
Credible Events, Not Forecasts
These impacts, some of which are connected to climate tipping points, are viewed as improbable but possible. The researchers stated that these models filled a gap in risk assessment that had rendered the UK not ready for worst-case results.
"The climate extremes we have mapped are not forecasts, but they are credible," stated Nigel Arnell who oversaw the research. "Britain has been formulating policy in the absence of the frameworks to plan for extreme possibilities. We've now given policymakers what they need to plan for climate outcomes they wish to avoid, but must not overlook."
A Suite of Extreme Weather Possibilities
Another collection of dire projections details the possible scale of harsh climate between now and the close of the 2100s. These indicate that temperatures could skyrocket in certain periods by up to 6C above historical levels, while rainfall could be 300% of typical amounts.
The chance of the extreme scenarios occurring could not be calculated due to uncertainty about what measures will be enacted to address global warming and how the climate system will behave. This approach was compared to defence planning or resilience checks for the banking sector.
Key Scenario Elements
- 4C Temperature Rise: Planetary heating soaring past 4C by 2100 could transpire if international cooperation fails or if powerful amplifying effects such as the tropical forests becoming a net carbon source emit its huge repository of carbon. This would result in severe and lengthy heatwaves and water shortages hitting the UK in summer.
- AMOC Shutdown: A critical sea current, the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (Amoc), is slowing down and showing signs of collapse due to global heating. A full shutdown starting around 2030 would lead to a 6C cooling in the UK. "Farming would struggle enormously and water supplies would be drastically changed," explained the lead researcher.
- Accelerated Coastal Flooding: A rise of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could happen if glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica melt abruptly, submerging coastal cities and towns. In contrast to the other scenarios, this risk is already understood by planners.
- Clean Air Warming: Global averages could also be pushed higher by about 0.75C if industrial aerosols is drastically reduced. This counterintuitive effect occurs because aerosol particles from industrial activity reflect solar radiation from warming the ground.
Building Resilience Against the Extreme
The severe models could be utilized in planning the construction of major projects, such as housing developments, power generation facilities and water management networks. Understanding these environmental threats could also accelerate the push to slash carbon pollution.
The study formulated the extreme models using a combination of real-world events, climate models and scientific theory. The scenarios omit broader worldwide issues like the devastation of food supplies and geopolitical instability.
The project was initiated as part of a government’s climate resilience programme. Earlier reports have cautioned that not enough attention was being paid to catastrophic yet improbable risks.
The government's climate advisors has stated that the UK must "adapt to 2C" and assess the dangers for four degrees. Previous adaptation plans have been criticised as being "very weak" by certain experts.
An official statement noted: "Global warming is at the core of our national priorities, both adapting for the future and becoming a renewable energy leader. It is vital that the UK is prepared for the consequences."
