Manchester United Set to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the club's fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a major uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club appear to be building positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure stated: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the American league, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
