Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a military coup in September and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after recent developments came to light.

This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.
