‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s path from rehabilitation to success with Athletic Bilbao

Thehe initial occasion the Athletic striker played in English soil, an young appearing for Athletic Bilbao B against Bundesliga youth at Adams Park in fall 2015, he found the net. The second time he played in the country, against Sunderland two months later, he converted. The third time, against Pep Guardiola’s team soon after, well, he scored again. When he returned to Manchester to take on Manchester United at Leigh’s ground in that year, he scored again. It was a superb volley, as well. “Truly,” he states, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve netted.” Thus the club did their duty: they substituted him.

“I was furious,” the attacker admits, and then he starts laughing. “Probably there’s a recording. Our match against United and I performed well. They kept me out of the latter period: my contract wasn’t finalized agreement, I was scoring goals, many stories circulated, it’s typical. I’m unsure regarding Newcastle being interested, but I recall seeing about Man United, the typical thing. It’s unclear the validity, but had they contacted me, my desire was to remain at Bilbao. It’s a privilege.”

La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph

At Lezama, Bilbao, the morning session is about to start; post-session, the brief trip to the airport and another flight to England, this time to take on the Magpies in the European elite competition on midweek. Just saying those two words makes Guruzeta smile. This is proving a challenging campaign for the club, partially owing to the requirements of being here. Losing in stoppage time in the local rivalry, they have managed just one win of their past eight league games and lost against Arsenal and Dortmund in the continental stage. However, take in the big picture, the memorable evenings and future challenges, and he feels a calm gratitude from him.

In the 36 months since he had rejoined the team, the striker has been a final four contender in Europe, denied at the last hurdle the showpiece event by the English giants, and has traveled on a traditional boat through the waterway flanked by countless supporters after lifting the trophy, the team’s initial silverware in 40 years. Now he is Athletic’s top scorer in the UCL, where they are distinctive and returning after absence in a decade. “This was beyond my dreams,” he says.

He considered it challenging enough just to make the first team and that proved true. As the child of the one-time rival player his father and a regular attendee at the team he now opposes, the forward is a product of Antiguoko, the San Sebastián club that developed the coach, the former star and the Bournemouth manager. He joined Athletic at 17 but after making his senior debut in that summer, he went through a ACL injury, dropped, a drop in category and a recall before he could finally secure an opportunity, returning at 26 to experience the peak of their lives.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta is preparing to face Newcastle in the Champions League.

“You go into the academy doubting you’ll make the senior squad but each step you progress through you’re persisting and you can observe the approach. You get there but … you have to leave.” He featured briefly in six matches in a handful of matches between his bow and early 2019. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games there and I tear my cruciate.

“It was a huge blow but I look back on it as a beneficial experience because it forced me to alter the perspective. The rehabilitation process is hard, but it’s beneficial. You cultivate routines new to you. Previously I was casual, but I attended practice and then go home, as a youngster does. In the facility, facilities are comprehensive, so take full advantage. Practice, prevention. Strength training. If your hips aren’t balanced, correct it. Assuming ankle mobility is good, improve it more. All those ‘silly things’: perform them.

“At the top level you’re going to crash into players who have crashed into players repeatedly. Extremely powerful. Seeing previous pictures: my physique was slight. Thus incidents occur. Current photos and it’s totally different. Injury made me see that. Training finishes, but further effort is needed. Teammates are set, really ready; you have to be too.”

Game time is essential. Guruzeta departed emotionally in the pandemic season, at 23 years old, moving to a lower level. At Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he netted three goals in forty appearances. During his Amorebieta stint in the following period, the he found his form. “It’s a common path: temporary moves, ended deals. If you turn it round, effort, faith, and when eventually they need someone for your role, they might come back for you. Readiness is vital. When they decided to call again, an aspiration fulfilled. The trophy success, play in Europe, and make the UCL … pfff.”

Understandably he remarks savor the moment. Especially after the previous season which, on occasions, was involved suffering. After being leading scorer with sixteen goals, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
