El Kaabi's Stunning Strike Caps The Atlas Lions' Triumph Over Comoros in Africa Cup of Nations Opener.

The the Moroccan side shook off a nervy beginning to overcome Comoros in the tournament's inaugural fixture on the weekend, after strikes by Brahim Díaz and substitute El Kaabi in the second half.

It was a far from convincing performance, though, from the heavily tipped Moroccans, who sit 97 places higher than the small island nation in the world rankings and were forced to work tirelessly for the points in wet conditions at the national stadium.

Nervy Beginning and Missed Chances

The hosts missed an early spot-kick and were goalless at the interval despite dominating possession, finally opening the scoring in the 55th minute.

The goal came when Noussair Mazraoui did well to prevent the ball from going out before laying it across for Díaz to sidefoot home.

Every opening game is invariably tough but we improved in the second period,” commented manager Walid Regragui.

The Substitute's Piece of Magic

The tension was subsequently extinguished by a piece of pure individual brilliance from Ayoub El Kaabi. Just 10 minutes following his introduction, the forward met a cross with a stunning bicycle kick in the 74th minute, doubling and ensuring the result.

Earlier in the match, the Moroccan team might have taken the lead in the 11th minute when a spot-kick was given for a challenge on Brahim Díaz. However, Soufiane Rahimi effort was saved by keeper Pandor.

The Visitors' Resistance and Late Opportunity

The underdogs comfortably held their more illustrious opponents at bay before the Moroccans' greater quality eventually told.

Shot-stopper Pandor made a number of further fine saves to limit the score as the game progressed, even though his team did have a chance for an equalizer shortly after Díaz's goal, with Rafiki Saïd firing straight at Morocco goalkeeper Bounou.

Injury Concern for Hosts

The victory was somewhat overshadowed by an injury to Morocco's skipper, Saïss, who limped off in the first half apparently in tears.

This centre-back had just made his comeback to the national side last month after a year’s absence caused by ankle surgery.

This result continues Morocco's historic run of consecutive victories to 19, surpassing the old best of 15 set by Spain between 2008 and 2009.
