Three police officers perished and no fewer than 15 additional individuals got wounded in an apparently deliberate gas explosion at a country home in the northern part of Italy.

How It Happened

The explosion occurred as officers and emergency crews entered the residence in the vicinity of Verona to enforce an removal notice for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three victims who died served in the Carabinieri military police.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the site and another man who ran away following the incident was located soon after. All three have been admitted to hospital.

The blast could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and images from the area revealed the structure left as a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

Background and Motive

The leader of the Veneto region, the regional head, explained the property was facing an removal notice due to unpaid amounts incurred by the property owners.

Mediators had been dispatched to talk with the family members who had locked themselves into the home. When the officers reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the residents triggered the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief Claudio Papagno told reporters.

A propane tank had been ignited, and the blast precisely impacted our members,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the property, the interior minister said.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the incident included an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three officers of the state police and a fire services member.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

The official thought the detonation had happened on a floor above the access point and told reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the incident, he mentioned members had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas cylinders being opened”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors stated to reporters, mentioning that the three had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto united with other political leaders in paying tribute to the three officers who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
