2K Brings Onboard Popular Battle Royale Developer to Revitalize Challenged Action Game Ambitious Title

2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently working on the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Transition Follows Lukewarm Reception

Brinkman takes on the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing early showing last autumn.

Recently, 2K president a key figure updated employees about this decision through an official communication, which stressed that playtesting had revealed the necessity for a distinct vision.

The president stated that the team is now reimagining the project with a revised vision, aiming to address gamer demands.

Trend of Strategic Hires

The news follows a similar action taken by the publisher in the summer, when they hired an industry veteran from the Diablo team to work on the BioShock development group.

Hello Everyone—

I understand you all just finished your town hall - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the positive developments. Last time I shared you all a note, I stated the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative developers we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to continue.”

Given your hard work and flexibility, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.

The gamer responses from last autumn’s Project ETHOS demo was informative. It validated the promise of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had work to do. It highlighted the need for a more distinct identity.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the input to heart and revamped the title with a revitalized vision - one that’s ready to deliver on its promise to our audience.

The trust in Project ETHOS grows every day. To boost the incredible progress you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Studio Head of 31st Union. Following a period of conversations, Ben starts with us on Monday, October 20.

Ben’s guidance and experience in the PVP shooter field is extensive, having spent the last 15 years developing and leading some of the most recognizable series in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, Apex Legends.

Let’s together in receiving Ben next week. We are all eager to persist witnessing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the time to ahead.

The President

Experience of the New Leader

Brinkman currently serves in the role of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier was employed at major gaming companies in multiple production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, prior to that, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Details and Vision

Project Ethos was unveiled in October 2024 together with a public demo. Initially, 31st Union presented the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting advancement on the style."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to match your preferred approach," the official summary reads. "Take on the rivals with unique powers, challenges, and obstacles that change every match. Will you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Or aim high, gamble everything, and pray your group can earn top ranking? The option is in your hands."

The game does not have an announced release date or consoles, but players can look forward to more updates as production continues.
